Because of the sampler structure of “Perfect Agreement,” the reader remains in the strange position of choosing pages with one part of the novel against another. Comedy is fun, but it doesn`t last long. Spelling rules are useful, but after all, it`s a novel, not a textbook. … But the shaker material is first class. And the title is right. The book speaks of perfect agreements – or at least a desire to make them – in grammar, in domestic life, in work, in education and in utopian theology (which is perhaps not very different from everyday theology). “Splendid! Downing`s view of science is so funny and full of discouraging precision that it might be easy to confuse his novel with a high-end campus satire… . but Perfect Agreement is much, much more. This may be the first novel in which the love story is thwarted by a discussion of the mechanics of sentences, but it does not make it any less moving. Downing has filled his book with so much intelligence and beauty that it can change your life as a loved one. And in the field of art, it doesn`t get more perfect.
